Abstract

Background
Different strategies can minimize the stockout of pharmaceutical products. Our institution has about 6,000 SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) of these products. The use of a risk matrix to identify and track critical products can be an important tool for the continuous supply of these products.
Objective
Describe the Design and implementation of a tool that allows the identification and monitoring of highly critical products to avoid stockout.
Material and method
A consultation was made to all internal clients, about the essential products for patient care. An analysis was performed and the risk value was determined to begin monitoring the stock levels of the products and guidelines to be followed for each case. An annual review of the list is made.
Results
232 products were received in consultation with the internal clients about essential products, which were analyzed according to the risk matrix; 43 products were considered critical.
Discussion
New additions to the matrix depend on the early warning of the internal client that uses it or after a previous stockout event. The composition of the list is typical of our institution but the structure of the designed risk matrix could be used as an analysis tool in any institution.

Conclusions

The implementation of a risk matrix for the continuous monitoring and supply of critical products in a high complexity hospital is an effective tool to reduce or avoid high impact stockouts.
